How would you warm up a cold swimming pool?

Though it might be hard, try to imagine today is a very hot day. You decide to take a swim, but the water in your pool is too cold. You have a bucket of warm water (50 degrees Celcius) and a cup of hot water (100 degrees Celcius). Which would you use to warm up your pool and why? Explain your thinking.

  1. i would choose the cup of hot water. i would choose this because the hot water would transfer kinetic energy to the cold water causing the cold water to warm up. if the bucket with warm water was thrown into the kiddy pool, the pool would either still be cold, or be to warm. that is my opinion..... :)

  3. I would use the cup of hot water that is hundred degrees celcius. I picked the cup of water because even though it is small because it is very hot. This means that they the particles of the hot water and the particles of the cold pool water will collide. When they collide, the hot water particles will transfer energy to the cold water paricles. This will makes the pool warm and the hot water particles and the cold water particles travel at the same speed and be the same temerature.

  4. I think you should use the cup of hot water because if you use the bucket of warm water I think the water in the pool would be between cold and warm water instead of warm.

I would use the cup of 100 C, because there is little (so the water won't be too hot), and the all heat/kinetic energy from it will make the swimming pool particles move faster, move farther apart, and hit each other harder, causing the swimming pool water to heat up and expand, so that you have a great swimming pool temperature.

  6. I think that i would use the cup of 100degree celsius water because the water is hot and the energy will transfer from the hot to cold water and balance the tempatures out. Then the pool will be the right tempature. Also if i use the bucket of warmer water it wouldnt warm the pool up much because the heat will transfer to the cold water leaving the warm water with a lack of heat which wouldnt do much good.

  7. I think that the most suitable way to warm up a cold pool is with a 100 degree celcius bucket of water. Since the pool is too cold for swimming and the water in the bucket is very hot the particles of the hot water will transfer it's energy to the pool's cold energy. this way the pool will neither be too hot nor too cold.It will then suitable for swimming.

  8. I would warm up the cold swimming pool by using the the cup of hot water. I say this because what matters is the heat (calories) and it doesn't matter if it is a large or small quantity. 100 degrees Celsius is very hot and I think it is hot enough to warm up the cold water. Also 50 degrees Celsius is not very hot and I think a large quantity will not warm up the cold swimming pool water.

  9. I would choose the cup of hot water (100 degrees Celcius). Thats because if i chose the warm water when you mix it with the cold water in the pool, the high kinetic energy in the warm water will collide with the low kinetic energy in the cold water in the pool. So when the moment of impact happens the high kinetic energy of the hot water decreases because of the low kinetic energy in the pool. So in the end the kinetic energy in pool is just alittle warmer than it was before . But the really hot cup of water has alot of kinetic energy even though it's mass is small, when it collide with the low kinetic energy of the cold pool it's kinetic energy is going to decrese but the kinetic energy of the hot water is really high so the pool will be warm enogh.

  10. I would use the cup of hot water. I would use the cup of hot water because particles can transfer heat, so the particles in the water go into the cold water filled, with cold water particles, and the few hot particles will transfer heat to the cold water particles. If I put in the bucket of warm water there would be less heat to transfer and it wouldnt make the pool as warm as the cup of hot water would.

  11. I would use the cup of hot water because the fast moving particles(hot) and slow moving particles (cold)would collide. Which would cause the fast moving particles to move slow and the slow moving particles to move fast, so it would be warm. Also if it is warm the energy would not transfer because energy only transfers from hot to cold (downhill). It would also be because of the high kinetic energy in the hot water and the low kinetic energy in the cold water transfers energy.

I think the cup of water would warm up the pool because the amount of heat that transfers to the cold water particles is what really matters. the particles will collide with each other and become the same temperature and 100 degrees celcius seems very hot to "warm" the cold water. 50 degrees celcius is not so hot so the water will warm up at the right temperature for a good swim on a "hot day".

  13. I would choose the cup of hot water that is 100 degrees Celcius. I would choose this because since the water is at 100 degrees, the kinetic energy of the particles are high. The amount does not matter. So when you pour in the hot water, the hot water particles will collide with the cold water particles in the pool. The fast moving particles will then transfer their energy to the cold water particles,making them move faster. Speed equals kinetic energy, which equals heat. So the pool will warm up more. Also, 50 degrees Celcius water particles do not have that much kinetic enegy, so it does not have that much heat. So the cup of 100 degrees Celcius water would be the best choice.

I would choose the cup of 100 degrees Celcius hot water because the hot water's particles have lots of kinetic energy and the cold water's particles have little kinetic energy when they mix and the particles collide,the kinetic energy from the hot water would transfer to the cold water particles, and they would begin to move at the same speed and have the same temperature.This all making the pool water warmer than the warm water would have.

  15. I would choose the cup of water that is 100 degrees Celcius because if you were to put the bucket of 50 degrees Celcius the water might still be cold or warm. So I chose the 100 degrees cup of water because when it makes contact with the pool the pool particles will speed up, causing them to gain kinetic energy. That means that the water to heat up.

  16. I would pick the cup of hot water which is 100 degrees celsuis. I would do this because the hot water particles are going really fast due to the kinetic energy. The bucket of 50 degrees celsius water would not make the cold swimming pool warm enough because there are more cold water particles than the warm water particles. So I think the cup of hot water which is 100 degrees celsuis would be a good choice

  17. I would choose the cup of hot water because the heat transfer from the cup to the pool would give off enough kinetic energy. The particles in the bucket of 50 degrees celcius warm water are not fast enough to produce a lot of heat. Also, if you use the bucket of water, the water would still be too hot or too cold. It needs to be just right for human body temperature. This is why I would choose the cup of hot water

  18. I would choose 100 degrees of hotwater in a cup because even though it small it makes up for its temperature thats what makes it better to use than the 50 degrees of hotwater in a bucket. Plus the partilces level is higher the bucket of water so the energy transfer from the hotwaterto the cold pool will be even

  19. i would use the 100 degrees celcius cup because it has more heat or calories than the bucket of 50 degrees celcius. Also the cup of water has high kinetic energy which cause the particles of the water to move rapidly and collide with each other. Since it has a many and rapid collisions, when u pour the cup in the pool the hot particles will begin to collide with the cold particles then all of the particles will have an abundant amount of collisions causing the kinetic energy to increase, and the whole pool would heat up.

    I would choose the cup of hot water that is 100 degrees celcius and I would choose it because of the temperature of it so that would mean that the water particles that were heated have a high kinetic energy and the water currently in the pool has a low kinetic energy.
    When you pour the water in because of the 2 different temperatures the particles will collide . Then a energy transfer will perform and will warm up the pool and the hot water particles will transfer some of their energy to the cold water particles so both of the particles will move at the same speed and the temperature will increase.

I choose the cup of 100 degrees Celsius because the boiling hot water which has extremely fast moving particles and the kinetic energy is high would transfer to the cold water which makes the cold water hitter therefore making the temperature of the cold swimming pool increase. The bucket of 50 degree Celsius water would also give energy and heat, but it might not give enough because the particles will be moving partially fast which means it won't have the same effect on the water that the hot water in the cup had.That would make the cold pool warmer, but it would still be cool.

  22. I would chose the 100 degrees Celsius water because it has more kinetic energy than the warm h2o. The 2 temperatures (hot and cold) will collide and the more kinetic energy will transfer to the cold water and the the two different particles will move at equilibrium.

  23. I would choose the cup of 100 degrees because it has a higher temperature than the warm water.The warm but is bigger, but it is also 50 degrees. The more kinetic energy the hotter it will be. The particles would move faster and faster causing them to expand. Therefore i pick the 100 degree celcuis cut.

  24. i would use the 100 degress cup of water.if this cup was added to the pool water the fast moving particles in the hot water would collide with the slower moving particles in the pool.the hot and cold water particles will hit causing them to be equal. when it is equal the particles will move at the same speed making the pool warmer, not lacking heat. when the heat transfer between the hot and cold particles perform the water in the pool wouldnt be "cold".

  25. ~I would choose the hot water to put into the pool or the warm water based on the size. If the pool is small I would put in warm water because there will be a little bit of cold water and then the kinetic energy from the warm water will collide with the particles in the cold water and they will move at the same speed.!!! ~

I would use the bucket of 100 degrees celcius warm water because right now the pool has low kinetic energy because their is cold water.If you add the hot water,when the two collide an energy transfer will be occurring.This will make the cold water's kinetic energy go up.None of the kinetic energy will be lost and the particles will move and the same rate.This is why I would put hot water in the swimming pool filled with cold water

  27. I would pick the 50 degrees celcius bucket of water instead of the 100 degree celcius cup of water. Even though both volumes of water would transfer energy to the slow moving particles in the pool water causing them to gain kinetic energy (increase in temperature)the greater volume of water might have more of an effect on the temperature.This is because adding a cupful a extremely hot water will only change the temperature a little. Where as a bucket full of moderate water will change the temperature much more because more of the particles are colliding.

  28. To make the pool warm i would use the cup of 100 degree celcius. I would use the hot cup because when the hot water particles which moves very fast mixes with the cold water particles which is very slow the hot water becomes cooler and decreases speed while the cold water gets warmer and the cold water particles speed up making the tempeture of the water warm and both water particles going at the same speed.If I used the warm water the particles are already warm and the particles are going at the same speed so if i added warm water to cold the pool would not feel warm it will still be cold water because the cold water particles will slow down the warm water particles.

  29. i would use the bucket of hot water over the cup of hot water. even though the cup of water is hotter than the bucket, it is still less which wouldnt be able to warm up the cold pool. i think that the bucket would warm it up

Erika 601 I would use the bucket of water rather than the cup. the cup would only warm up a small portion of the pool. the bucket will transfer all of its kinetic energy and the molecules/particles will begin to move faster.the buckets water will spread to a greater portion of the pool and warm it up when the two particles of hot and cold water collide

  32. Say the pool was 10 degrees celsius. If you averaged the bucket of warm water with the pool it would be 30 degrees celsius. If you averaged the cup of hot water with the pool it would be 55 degrees celsius. Now I have to take some things into consideration. The pool obviously has more water than a cup or a bucket, so the pool will only warm down a little bit with the bucket of warm water. It will warm down a tad bit more with the cup of hot water, so I would put the cup of hot water into the pool.

  33. If I had the choice of the bucket of 50 degrees Celsius water, and the cup of 100 degrees Celsius water, I would choose to warm the swimming pool with the cup of 100 degrees Celsius water. I say this, because even though the bucket of water has more quantity than the cup of hot water, the cup has more heat. More heat is what I would need to warm up the swimming pool. If I put the cup of 100 degrees Celsius water into the swimming pool, some of the cup's hot particles will transfer to the cold particles, making the cup's particles cooler and the pool's particles hotter. The pool's particles and the cup's particles will balance out their temperatures and the pool's water will be capable of swimming in. If I were to do this with the bucket of water, there wouldn't be that much of an effect on the pool's temperature because it wouldn't be as hot. This is why I choose the cup of 100 degrees Celsius water.

  34. I would use the cup of hot water to warm up my pool because when I add the hot water to the cold water the water pattern would change. The hot water added to the cold water would make the water move fast causing the water to contain kinetic energy making the water warm. I would not use the warm water because the temperature is not that hot and just keep the pool cool.

  36. I would use the cup of hot water. Even though a cup is smaller than a bucket there is a big difference. The cup of water is 100 degrees celcius and the bucket of water is 50 degrees celcius. If you poured the cup of hot water into the pool the kinetic energy with transfer from the hot water particles to the cold water particles. The paricles will then become the same tempature. This will be enough to warm up the pool.

  37. I would use the cup of 100 degree celcius water. I would use that because of the fact that it is a hot day you would'nt want very hot water which the bucket of water would create. So if you poured in the cup of water there is enough water for the particles of the hot water to collide with some of the cold water particles. When they collide, the the hot water particles will cool down and the cold water particles will heat up. When the cold water particles gain kinetic energy, speed up, and warm up, the speed of the particles will make the cold water particles that are now warm to collide with the cold water particles. Because, there wasn't alot of water going into the pool initially, there will be some particles still cold. But, the water will be warmer than before, warm enough for you to swim in.

  38. I would use the warm water of 50 degrees celcius because as written above it is a very HOT day and the person wants the pool to be WARM. Therefore, if you use the hot water the water will be TOO HOT, while with the warm water it will not.

  39. i would use the 100 degree Celsius cup of water because even though both amounts of water isn't a sufficient enough to heat a cold pool.the 50 degrees Celsius bucket of water is to cool( lack of heat) to make a big pool hot enough to swim in .so the better choice is to use the 100 degrees and the fast moving particles (hot)and the slow moving particles (cold or lack of heat) collide causing energy transfer , and the slow moving particles will become faster and the fast moving particles will become slower. but since since the amount of the hot water isn't enough the pool will become hotter ,and the particles will go at the same speed . but the pool will be more colder then hotter , but hot enough to swim in . that's why i think the 100 degrees Celsius will be a better choice

I would because when you collide the hot water and the cold pool water the hot water's particles energy will transfer to the cold swimming pool's water particles and therefore, making the whole swimming pool's particles the same speed and making the water a warm tempature. I would choose the Bucket of water because if you measure that degrees in Farenheit it would be probobaly over 80 or 90 degrees(Exactly 122 degrees Farenheit) so that would be warm enough but the 100 degrees celcius (212 Degrees Farenheit) would be way to hot even if its only a cup because of these factors:
    Its a Hot day
    If you want to swim you would most likely wear light swin gear
    Hot water is uncomfortable
    212 degrees Farenheit is when the water begins to boil so thats water that would burn.

  45. If I had a choice between a bucket of 50 degree Celsius water and the cup of warm water that is 100 degrees Celsius I would so pick the cup full of 100 degree Celsius water! We all know the higher the temperature the more kinetic energy the substance/object has and the cup full of 100 degree Celsius water has so much kinetic energy going on, therefore meaning that the particles would be moving around much faster. So when you mix the 100 degree Celsius water with the swimming pool water the particles are going to collide and go about the same speed till they reach the equilibrium temperature. That means that the 100 degree Celsius water will have a much more warmer effect on the swimming pool than the bucket of 50 degree Celsius water since it's like twice the temperature.

  46. I would use the bucket of warm water. I would use this because although the cup of hot water is 100 degrees, it wont help! It will probably only warm up 4/16 of the entire pool! The warm water is a larger amount, and will most likely warm up the entire pool. Also, when you collide the warm water particles with the cold water particles, the warm particles give energy to the cold particles and they all move at the same speed causing the pool to warm up.

  47. I would use the cup of 100 degree water to arm up the cold pool water instead of the 50 degree bucket of water. I would use it because even though there is not a lot of water in the cup as in the bucket but the water in the cup is warmer. Since it is warmer it can warm up the water more. The warm wear particles will mix with the cold (less kinetic energy) particles . While that happened the cold water particles started to get more kinetic energy and bumped into each other causing more space between them. While the warm water started to lose kinetic energy and still bumped into each other but did not cause a lot of space between them.

  49. I would use the cup of hot water because when we were doing the experiment in class the kinetic energy from the heat transferred to the cold water particles. Since all of the kinetic energy in the heat was transferred to the cold water particles the speed of the particles increased and the temperature raised and the particles moved farther apart and allowed you to have a nice warm pool water to swim in. Lets say I did use the bucket of warm water then warm water's particles would barely increase because the even though it has larger volume it would just be consumed by the cod water particles and become cold.

  50. I think that the hot water is going to warm up the pool. I think this because the average amount of kinetic enery in the hot water particles are moving fast. When the hot particles collide with the cold water particles, it might transfer more energy until the average amount of kinetic energy is the same.

  51. If I would choose between the 100 degree celcius water between the 50 degree celcius water I would choose the 50 degree water. I would choose the 50 degree celcius water because since the water is cold it will warm up by the 50 degree hot water transferd its kinetic energy to the cold water.The kinetic energy would turn the cold water into warm water. Think of it , if you put the 100 degree celcius water in it it would be too hot plus it is a very hot day which the air has alot of kinetic energy. The water will be just warm from the 50 degree celcuis water. The air also got kinetic energy. That is why I would pick the 50 degree celcius water instead of the 100 degree celcius water.

  53. I think i would choose the bucket of warm water. Even though adding 100 degree Celsius water to cold water would warm up the cold water, a small cup of it would not be very effective. At least the bucket of water is warm. I learned that when matter with lack of heat comes in contact with matter that has heat, the colder matter extracts heat from the warmer matter so that both matters have an even amount of heat. So by adding the bucket of warm water, the particles in the cold water will be warmer along with the particles in the warm water becoming colder. Then the water will have a new temperature.

I would use the cup of 100 degrees.I would do so because if you use the bucket of 50 degrees of water the pool wont become warm because the water is not hot enough to make the cold water hotter.But even though the cup is not that big it matters on how hot the temperature is to decide on which one to use.Also,it doesn't say how big the bucket or cup is.For all we know the bucket might be smaller than the cup.So,that's my answer.

    IF I had to choose what temperature and mass of water that i would use to cool a little pool and my choices were 50 degrees bucket full of hot water and a little cup of 100 degrees hot water i would pick the 100 degrees little cup because since it is not a big swimming pool you are trying to warm up this may not be such a hard task but if ypu were to place the 100 dgrees of hot water it may over power the cold water causing the cold water to probably become hotter than you are trying to get it to become therefore i would pick the little cup because the temperature may be hotter than the bucket but it is a small amount and it will have a big effect since it's kinetic energy is higher and the particles are moving faster it may cause the pool to change temperature and the change of the temperature should be close to the average amount of kinetic energy that should be at least a warm temperature not too cold and not too hot but it kinda is in between and not leaning closer to cold or hot in the middle

  56. I think neither the cup or bucket of water would work to heat up the pool because it does not say the size of the cup and the bucket. For example if you use a small cup filled with hot water at 50 degrees Celsius it won't heat it up a lot. Also the same thing would happen if you use a small bucket of hot water at 100 degrees Celsius. In addition if you pour a large bucket of water at 100 degrees Celsius hot water it would be too hot to go in. The same thing would happen if you use a large cup of 50 degrees Celsius hot water.

  57. I think that both options would work the same. The warm water had a lot more particles than the cup so each particle could give off less energy than the particles that the cup had to give off. But the warm water particles didn't have that much heat in the first place. At the same time the hot water, even though it had less particles, the water was still hot so it most likely had more energy to give off but the pool had a lot of particles so the effect probably wouldn't be that great.

  58. I would use the 50 degrees celcius bucket of water.The 100 degrees celcius cup of water is too hot and would be to little of an amount of water.The 50 degrees celcius bucket of water would full up the whole pool and make it easier to swim in.

  59. I would rather add the bucket of warm water instead of the cup of hot water. I think that the bucket of water would have a stronger impact on an entire pool. The heat from the warm water particles transfer to the cold water particles. The result is a new temperature from the average kinetic energy of the paricles.

  60. I would consider the bucket of water over the cup of water because it has more water to endure the coldness of the pool. Also since there is more water then the more kinetic energy would affect the temperature of the pool's water. Let's say you put a cup of water that may be incandescent but the less kinetic energy the lower it can affect the temperature. However the more hotter a substance is the more kinetic energy it may have but it also depends about the mass of the substance.Also overtime the heat will ware off, so I would consider for temperature to think about the mass and the conditioning of the liquid.

  61. I know that is al little bit late, but I still want to do this. I would rather use the small cup of 100 degree celcus water. I would use that because, it would most likely warm up the whole pool because of its high temperature. I would also use that because, the particles are moving really fast, and the pools particles are moving slowly and the hot water particles , because of energy transfer, would make the pool water particles warm up a little bit. So that is why i would use thasmall cup of 100 degree celcuis water
