Differential Heating

We've concluded that different parts of the Earth receive different amounts of heat energy: closest to the center there is a high solar angle which means more intense heat, and farther from the center there is a low solar angle meaning less intense heat.

So, what does this actually mean? How does this translate into things happening in the troposphere? Start thinking about the bigger picture by answering this question:

Do you think different materials on Earth heat up differently? If so, explain? If not, why not? Speak specifically about soil, sand, water, and air.

  1. From what we learned today,I now know that different Earth materials do heat up differently. This may be because of the thickness or thiness of a material. For example, sand is a very thin material. Soil is alot thicker. During our experiiment, soil's temperature was alot higher at 15 minutes than sand's temperature at 15 minutes. Maybe when a material is thick, it's harder for sunlight to go through the material. And when the material is thin, it is easier for sunlight to pass through. I wonder if this is actually howeit works. My graph showed that air got the hottest the quickest at 15 minutes. Obviously, air gets hot fast. But if it does, than why is it the hottest in the middle of the day? Well, that's probably because of the Sun.

    I think that they do heat up differently because the solid materials like dirt and sand have different substances that make up the dirt or sand.Water would heat up differently because there's more of it that spreads around the earth.there's lots of air and moves around so its hard for the suns rays to focus on 1 point so it takes longer to heat up

    I agree with angus that solid materials heat up faster than anything else. Water takes a longer time to heat up because of the amount of water that covers earth.

  4. i think earths materials do heat up differently because they are different objects having different properties .. so in that case there are solids , liquids and gases in this experiment . they are all made from different substance , and minerals causing different things to happen. in this experiment water is a liquid , soil and dirt are solids and air is a gas.

  5. earths materials got affected by the sun except for water i think that happens because the radiation goes right through it. air will heat up the fastest because it is a gas. but soil and sand are soilds so they might take a little while to heat up and obsorb the radiation. Air has very fast moolecules because it heat up very fast. but on the other hand water has very slow molecules because it will take a long time to heat up.

The reason the Earth's materials heat up differently because each material takes up a certain amount of radiant eneergy at a certain rate and the state of matter matters too.Water heats up the slowest because when radiant energy strikes a material,it makes the material's particles move faster.That is how materials heat up.The faster the particles move,the faster the material heats up.Air particles move the fastest.The water particles are the particles that move the slowest.

I think they do heat up differently. air is free so it travels alot. when it is near a certain temperature it immediately changes. water is a liqudid. there is more water so it spreads over the earth. sand and soil are solids. they are tiny partcles. they are also made from different substances. i think that the air would take longer because its free but not only air, most gases too. the way it moves the suns rays can't keep up so it takes a lot of time to heat up.
